Lavage de la Madeleine 2015
Colors of Brazil
Paris gets in the Brazilian spirit with the Lavage de la Madeleine, a festival whose origins go back to the 18th century. At that time, slaves were forced to wash the church and its surroundings during preparations for the Bonfim Festival, but locked out of the church during services. So they began their own parade with traditional music, dance and ceremonial white dress. Today, the festival attracts some 30,000 attendees and has grown to include five days of celebration of Brazilian culture. This year, the new Brazilian Village features gourmet food stands serving up coxinhas and risoles, Zumba and samba classes, dance performances, DJ sets and concerts by well-known talents such as Margareth Menezes and Elba Ramalho. The event culminates in a festive march for world peace ending on the steps of the Madeleine Church – white dress code exigée.
