Jodi Doherty decided two years ago, after the death of her two parents, to quit her job and home in New York to fulfill a dream of living in Paris. A middle-aged, independent woman, she was realistic about the challenges ahead. She did not speak French, but she had many skills and the confidence of an events planner that she believed would help her get settled in. Jodi was unstoppable about her decision to move to France and determined to make it work.

“I had been obsessed with Paris for a long time, and after years of caregiving, I knew it was now or never to pursue my dream. but I knew I would need help.” – Jodi Doherty

To help her find an apartment and navigate French bureaucracy, she turned to Delphine Brière of My Paris Touch. For work opportunities, she searched LinkedIn and Malt while reaching out to former colleagues and clients. She also joined numerous expat networking associations, including the American Women’s Group in Paris, Le WIC de Paris, and INSPIRELLE.

Nancy Ing Duclos, co-founder of INSPIRELLE, spent years working as a profession libérale to re-establish herself as a television news producer in France. As her career found its footing and flourished, she was too busy covering breaking news stories to fully grasp how the French tax system worked for independent workers and how it would affect her retirement. The more she earned, the more she paid in taxes and social charges — to the point that she felt she was giving everything back to the state.

“The French bureaucracy and laws overwhelmed me. I felt like a hamster trapped on a wheel.” – Nancy Ing Duclos

She finally turned to expert-comptable Faten Amamou of ESCEC International, who helped Nancy restructure her business regime so that she could pay herself a salary, dividends, and cover her expenses efficiently. Looking back, Nancy wishes she had sought out an English-speaking certified accountant for guidance sooner. Now, she is also speaking to other advisors like Amanda Johnson, who specializes in expat finances, and notary Marie-Florence Bouquement to understand French inheritance laws and taxes better since France is now her permanent home.

How many times have you been asked for recommendations or read on the expat group social media threads about people seeking help moving, settling in Paris, making education choices, finding therapists, or seeking medical support?

“When you’re suddenly faced with health or medical problems and need answers and relief, it can feel overwhelming – especially when you’re not in your home country. But what many people don’t realize is just how many incredible specialists are available right here in Paris to help.” – Grace Wong-Folliet

Whether you’re dealing with ADHD, chronic back pain, relationship issues, or looking for mental health support, there are English-speaking professionals who can guide you.

Sex & Relationship Therapist Jessamy Holland, speaking at an INSPIRELLE event.

For so many women who move to Paris for school, work, family or change, the move abroad is both exhilarating and daunting.
